University of Newcastle: Biomedical Science Work Integrated Learning Placements for 2023: Placing students in your workplace

The School of Biomedical Science and Pharmacy is introducing a new pathway for students to undertake non-paid placements within businesses in the Hunter’s Health and MedTech Industry.

Students will be in their final year of a Biomedical Science Degree and have excellent written and verbal communication skills, in addition to substantial knowledge in relation to human health, human disease, health research, literature scanning, data gathering (including a range of biomedical tests), data analysis, report writing and scientific communication.

The intent is for students to be placed into work environments such that they can gather skills relevant to a future career in the Health and MedTech sector. The program also provides businesses an opportunity to attract top quality students to their organisation. There is an expectation that students will work as part of existing teams on new or existing projects and will not require a specific or individualised project to work on.

The program seeks to place the student in a relevant workplace for between 4-8 weeks, on a part time basis. Ideally, students would be engaged 1-2 days per week starting no earlier than May 2023 and no later than early July 2023 and will run until Mid Oct 2023. Workplaces will be required to provide appropriate supervision for students for the duration of the placement and be prepared to undertake a modest assessment of the student’s performance at the end of the placement. Businesses will have an opportunity to vet students prior to placement.

The University of Newcastle will cover the insurance of students for the duration of the placement.
